England advanced to the semi-finals after a 2-1 victory over Norway, which came after extra time in the quarter-finals. Jude Bellingham made a significant impact by scoring two goals to overturn Andreas Schjelderup’s opening goal and helped his team secure a place in the last four.
Argentina also had to rely on extra time to defeat Switzerland, with a 3-1 scoreline. Alexis Mac Allister opened the scoring for the defending champions, but Dan Ndoye quickly equalized. Julian Alvarez then put Argentina ahead with a beautiful curling shot from outside the penalty area, and substitute Lautaro Martinez sealed the win in extra time.
As two of the leading teams in global football prepare to clash, Elfath and his officiating crew will bear the responsibility of managing one of the most eagerly awaited matches of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
The spotlight now shifts to the second semifinal featuring England and the defending champions Argentina, a rivalry that has given rise to numerous memorable World Cup moments over the years.
Shabbir Ali, a former captain of the Indian team and a recipient of the Dhyan Chand award, believes that England’s disciplined performances have made them formidable contenders, even with Argentina’s Lionel Messi on the field.
“England has shown strong defensive capabilities, and Jude Bellingham has been exceptional. Harry Kane is a consistent threat, and they have talented players available from the bench. If they can cut off Messi’s supply, they have an excellent chance,” he stated.
However, he cautioned against fixating exclusively on the Argentine captain. “It’s not just Messi; there are other players like Julian Alvarez and Enzo Fernandez. England must focus on containing the whole team, not just one individual.” Ali also highlighted England’s aerial strength as a potential game-changer.
“England can be lethal both on the ground and in the air. Argentina’s defenders will need to be very cautious.” Chauhan, however, argued that Argentina’s emotional advantage could be pivotal.
“This is more than a mere match; the historical context between these nations and the unity within the Argentina squad provide them with extra motivation. The team that dominates the midfield will likely take control, but I feel Argentina has what it takes to reach yet another final,” she noted.
Nabi expressed that England could challenge Argentina’s shaky defense but also warned that Messi’s abilities might be crucial. “England features players like Bellingham and Kane who are in form, but Messi can change a match in an instant. Argentina must maintain a compact midfield and prevent England from controlling the pace of the game,” he concluded.
