Sooryavanshi was included in the playing XI, replacing opener Sanju Samson, with captain Shreyas Iyer confirming the change during the toss.
This young talent has eclipsed Sachin Tendulkar’s long-held record, now holding the title of the youngest male cricketer to debut for India. Furthermore, he surpassed Shafali Verma to become the youngest Indian to make an international debut, regardless of gender. Shafali had set this record after her debut in September 2019.
The left-handed opener received his first senior call-up following a remarkable journey through the ranks. He recently played for India A under Tilak Varma’s leadership in a tri-series in Sri Lanka before joining the senior team for the ongoing tours of Ireland and England.
Morkel did not specify a clear timeline for Sooryavanshi’s international debut but noted that the 15-year-old has integrated well into the Indian dressing room and the routines during practice.
“I believe he’s fitted in very well. If you follow the boys on Instagram, you’ll see a lot of photos being shared, especially of him. Being a 15-year-old at the international level can be daunting.
“However, from the couple of practice sessions we’ve had, it has been quite impressive. We are all eager to see how he performs. When he gets the chance, I’m confident he’ll be prepared. The transition into the squad has gone very smoothly,” he stated.
The former South Africa fast bowler was also impressed by another newcomer, fast bowler Prince Yadav, who has taken six wickets in three international matches to date.
“I was fortunate to work with Prince while I was with the Lucknow Super Giants. At that time, he was a net bowler, and he was already identified as having significant potential. I’m amazed by how composed he remains.
“He’s someone who continuously seeks to enhance his game. But ultimately, it’s about execution. When discussing death bowling and the middle phase, how he interprets the game, the decisions he makes under pressure, and executing those decisions—it’s wonderful to witness,” he remarked.
Morkel further expressed admiration for Harshit Rana, who has returned to bowling with intensity after recovering from an injury.
