Smriti Mandhana Outlines Strategy for Crucial Match: 'We Aim to Play Aggressively Against Australia'
India’s vice-captain, Smriti Mandhana, has pledged an assertive strategy against Australia as the Women in Blue gear up for a crucial Women’s T20 World Cup Group A match on Sunday.

To secure a spot in the semifinals, India must triumph over the six-time champions, having found themselves in a tight race for qualification alongside South Africa.

“It’s a significant match, no doubt. We have all emphasized the importance of playing an aggressive style of cricket, and that’s exactly what we’ll aim to execute tomorrow,” Mandhana stated ahead of the match.
The left-handed batsman acknowledged that India’s batting lineup has not consistently displayed the intent the team had envisioned throughout the tournament.

“In our batting meetings, we’ve often discussed the need to approach our innings with intent. Although we haven’t reached that level consistently, everyone in the batting group is eager to make a strong impression,” she commented.

Mandhana feels that the gap between India and Australia has significantly decreased in recent years, highlighting the Women’s Premier League and international leagues as pivotal to the team’s development.

“We performed well in the T20 format in Australia and will carry that confidence forward. With the WPL and players participating in the Big Bash, the shared experiences are invaluable. The gap has surely narrowed,” she remarked.

The 29-year-old expressed faith that she and opening partner Shafali Verma can give India the strong starts required after a challenging period during the recent England tour.

“We’re really excited to get back to providing solid starts for India because when we set a good foundation, we usually find ourselves in a favorable position. I’m pleased with how she’s connecting with the ball, and I hope we can form a strong partnership,” Mandhana noted.

Additionally, Mandhana shared that she sought batting insights from former Australia opener Matthew Hayden and Sri Lanka legend Kumar Sangakkara, hoping those discussions will enhance her performance in this high-stakes match.

“I’ve admired Sangakkara sir and Matthew Hayden for many years. They generously shared their experiences, which I aim to incorporate into my batting,” she explained.

With a chance to secure a semifinal spot at stake, India will be striving to deliver one of their finest performances of the tournament against the defending champions.
