Sunil Chhetri: Messi's Hat-Trick Showed Why He's Among the All-Time Greats
Indian football legend Sunil Chhetri has commended the outstanding performances of the tournament’s top attacking talents. He specifically highlighted Lionel Messi’s hat-trick, Japan’s decisive 4-0 win, and Morocco’s match against Scotland as his key moments from the FIFA World Cup thus far.

In discussing the leading forwards’ displays, Chhetri remarked that the tournament’s star players have truly stepped up.

“I believe none of them have let us down. Messi, Ronaldo, Haaland, Mbappé, Harry Kane, Isak, Gyökeres; all the forwards who were in the spotlight before the tournament have come through. It’s rare to see all the top names perform so well early in a major tournament, which has been fantastic for football enthusiasts,” he shared with the official broadcasters.
Chhetri offered special recognition to Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, noting their incredible longevity and steadfast commitment to competing at the highest level.

“Consider Messi and Ronaldo, who are nearing 40. Their ability to shine on the global stage at this age is remarkable. If there’s one lesson young players should take from them, it’s their relentless drive. They have achieved nearly everything in football, yet they continue to play with the same passion and dedication,” Chhetri remarked.

When asked about his favorite moments from the tournament, Chhetri mentioned Messi’s remarkable hat-trick, Japan’s impressive 4-0 victory, and the Morocco-Scotland match that he witnessed live in Boston.

“Messi’s hat-trick reminded us why he is regarded as one of the greatest to ever play the game. Japan’s 4-0 victory was particularly notable because it highlighted the advancement of Asian football. The Morocco versus Scotland match was also thrilling to witness live, thanks to the vibrant atmosphere and high-quality play,” he added.

Looking towards the future, Chhetri feels privileged that fans can experience both the concluding chapters of Messi and Ronaldo’s legendary careers and the emergence of a new generation led by Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland.

“I don’t see a rivalry between the generations. Messi and Ronaldo have built their unique legacies, while Mbappé, Haaland, and others will carve out their own narratives. As a neutral observer, just enjoy the spectacle. You never know how many more chances you’ll have to see Messi and Ronaldo on a stage like this,” Chhetri concluded.
