Despite reports of Sharmila discussing her Rajya Sabha ambitions with Rahul Gandhi even after the election notification, her name was absent from the final candidate list released by the party. The Congress ultimately finalised the nominations of party president Mallikarjun Kharge, AICC national spokesperson Pawan Khera, and Mansoor Ali Khan, the son of former Union Minister C.M. Ibrahim, for the three vacant Rajya Sabha seats from Karnataka.
This development has sparked renewed discussions on why Sharmila, once viewed as a potential asset for Congress in Andhra Pradesh, failed to secure a position in the Upper House.
Expectations Versus Reality
When the Congress appointed Sharmila as the APCC chief, the leadership anticipated that her presence would rejuvenate the party’s fortunes in Andhra Pradesh. The reasoning was simple: she is the daughter of former Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy and sister to former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy.
Congress strategists expected YSR’s loyal voter base to rally around Sharmila, aiding in the reestablishment of the party’s diminished influence in the state. They also believed that her strained relationship with Jagan could attract anti-Jagan leaders and supporters seeking an alternative platform.
However, those expectations did not translate into electoral success. Under Sharmila’s leadership, neither she nor the Congress managed to secure a single seat in the 2024 Andhra Pradesh Assembly elections.
Leadership Under Scrutiny
Political analyst Pole Vikram shared with News18 that there is a notable distinction between campaigning for established leaders and independently steering a political party.
“Supporting leaders like Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy or Jagan Mohan Reddy in a campaign is one thing. Ensuring effective leadership by independently establishing and guiding an organization is quite another,” he remarked.
According to Vikram, the Congress leadership anticipated Sharmila would generate momentum for the party, particularly given her past extensive campaigning for Jagan.
“There was optimism that Sharmila would inject new energy into Congress. She had already showcased her campaigning skills during Jagan’s rise. Yet, somewhere along the line, things did not click. Additionally, there have been criticisms regarding her inability to unify different factions within the party. Several leaders departed, even with Congress’s limited organizational structure in the state,” he noted.
Failure to Rebuild the Party
Political observers contend that Sharmila’s challenges persisted beyond the elections. Critics argue that she struggled to keep the party relevant afterward. Aside from some occasional critiques of Jagan Mohan Reddy and the ruling NDA government, little evidence indicates significant organizational growth under her leadership.
This perceived lack of political efficacy may have swayed the Congress high command’s decision to overlook her for a Rajya Sabha position.
Karnataka Equations Worked Against Her
Many within Congress circles believed that Karnataka would present Sharmila with a viable pathway to the Rajya Sabha. However, the state’s shifting political landscape seems to have worked against her.
The recent shift in power from Siddaramaiah to D.K. Shivakumar as Chief Minister created a complex balancing act for party leadership. Congress needed to address competing interests from both factions while ensuring representation for key national figures.
The nomination of party president Mallikarjun Kharge was a major priority, leaving little room for further political considerations.
Even though Sharmila is thought to have close ties with D.K. Shivakumar’s family, analysts suggest that Shivakumar may have lacked the political clout to advocate for her nomination under the current conditions.
“Reports have long indicated that D.K. Shivakumar facilitated Sharmila’s appointment as APCC chief. Typically, he may have been able to back her Rajya Sabha aspirations as well. However, the situation in Karnataka today is quite different,” Vikram said.
“The Congress is encountering political challenges both nationally and across various states. The party seeks leaders who can deliver results and enhance its organization. In such a scenario, justifying a crucial position like a Rajya Sabha seat for a leader lacking significant political influence becomes difficult,” he added.
From Jagan’s Campaigner to Congress Leader
Sharmila’s political journey has been fraught with dramatic shifts. In 2012, she launched the notable Maro Praja Prasthanam padayatra to bolster the YSR Congress Party established by her brother, Jagan Mohan Reddy.
After Jagan assumed the role of Chief Minister in 2019, reports emerged of disagreements regarding political roles and family property disputes. In 2021, Sharmila exited Andhra Pradesh politics and founded the YSR Telangana Party.
That party, however, struggled to achieve significant electoral success. In the lead-up to the 2024 elections, she merged her party with Congress and became the Andhra Pradesh Congress president.
Now, two years later, despite aspirations for a Rajya Sabha seat, Sharmila finds herself sidelined, grappling with pressing questions concerning her political relevance and future role within Congress.
