VinFast-Backed Green SM Enters India’s Ride-Hailing Sector with Plans for 15,000 Electric Cabs

VinFast-Backed Green SM Enters India's Ride-Hailing Sector with Plans for 15,000 Electric Cabs
A new international competitor has officially entered India’s $15-billion ride-hailing market, aiming to revive the vision of an all-electric fleet through a highly standardized, asset-heavy approach. Supported by EV manufacturer VinFast, Green SM has launched operations in Delhi-NCR with a fleet-optimized, 7-seater electric MPV platform.

The timing is strategic. Entering the gap left over a year ago by the fall of India’s homegrown EV cab leader, Green SM is directly addressing traditional pain points by offering fares that start at approximately ₹8/km with a firm policy of zero surge pricing.

The Pricing & Driver Strategy
In contrast to the gig-worker model used by traditional ride-hailing giants, Green SM adopts an asset-heavy, fleet-managed model. To stabilize operations and maintain service standardization, the company employs its drivers directly, providing a guaranteed monthly salary of ₹35,000 to ₹50,000 or more.

When asked about competing in a highly price-sensitive market against established players like Ola and Uber, Bach Tuan Anh, CEO of Green SM India, remarked: “We are committed to ensuring our pricing remains reasonable and affordable for Indian consumers. At this initial stage, we are not approaching India with just a competitive mindset. Our aim is to offer an additional mobility option for Indian consumers—be it for work, leisure, or daily commutes in the city.”

Addressing the persistent driver challenges that have historically troubled the Indian ride-hailing sector, Tuan Anh highlighted their commitment to driver security:

“We guarantee a monthly income for drivers of up to ₹35,000, contingent on meeting specific requirements. After the launch phase, total driver earnings can reach ₹50,000 per month or even beyond.”

Navigating the Shadow of Past EV Failures

The asset-heavy EV cab model has previously posed challenges for players in India, with past failures often associated with complex internal vehicle sourcing. Since Green SM exclusively acquires its fleet through its strategic partner, VinFast, inquiries about long-term structural viability inevitably arise.

In addressing these issues and how Green SM aims to avoid past pitfalls, Tuan Anh stated: “Before entering India, we invested considerable time studying the market, understanding the operating environment, and learning from experiences in other countries… With our operational model and the insights gained over the past three years in Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Laos, we are confident in our ability to succeed in India.”

When questioned about unit economics, operational break-even points, and fleet utilization rates, the company prioritized immediate execution over premature financial benchmarks. “Currently, our main focus is on stabilizing the model first. We are dedicated to developing a strong driver network, enhancing our core business operations, and guaranteeing service quality. At this stage, these are our immediate priorities.”

The 15,000-Vehicle Roadmap

Green SM is launching with an initial fleet of 1,000 cabs across Gurgaon, Delhi, and Noida. However, the brand has ambitious plans, aiming to rapidly scale up to 15,000 vehicles by the year’s end before extending its reach to Bengaluru and Hyderabad.

Concerning the pace of fleet expansion, Tuan Anh concluded: “Our top priority is to grow the fleet adequately so customer waiting times remain as low as possible. From that foundation, we will continue to assess actual demand and customer travel patterns. Based on that demand, we will incrementally increase the number of vehicles in the fleet throughout the year.”

Although India’s ride-hailing market is filled with the debris of companies that failed to find the right balance between driver retention and passenger pricing, Green SM is relying on its cross-border operational strategy to establish a sustainable business in India.
