Vijay’s landmark victory ignites optimism — the real challenge begins now.

Vijay is sworn in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, while TVK leaders assume their roles as ministers.
Instances like the one observed on Sunday morning at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium are uncommon in Indian politics. In a mere two years, making the leap from cinematic celebrity to a prominent political figure, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has made history.

Vijay, affectionately known as Thalapathy (Commander) among his vast fanbase, has joined the ranks of a select few leaders across the country who, emerging from a different realm, have successfully transformed politics in a state by winning the trust of the populace through hope, vision, and commitment.

Turning 52 next month, Chief Minister (CM) Vijay shared insights into his vision with the state’s citizens today. For the swearing-in ceremony, he opted for a Western suit, stepping away from the traditional ‘Veshti’ (dhoti) and ‘angavastram’ (upper cloth). This choice sent a powerful message, alongside members of his new Cabinet dressed in casual trousers and shirts, indicating that the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam aims to carve out its own unique path.
With minimal fanfare, the new CM announced three significant decisions: the provision of 200 units of free electricity, the establishment of a dedicated women’s safety force, and the creation of an anti-narcotics enforcement unit. These actions clearly signaled his administration’s priorities and operational style to his supporters.

Even more noteworthy was the assertion made during his speech to supporters: under his administration, he would be the sole center of authority and power. His words would carry the most weight. He also committed that public funds would be managed in a way that is transparent, accountable, and diligent.

Aware of the high expectations from the populace, he reaffirmed his intent to fulfill the promises made during the election campaign. However, he cautioned that implementing all of them would take time and urged patience in light of the trust placed in him. The strongest backing he received came from the younger generation—those navigating the digital landscape—often referred to as “Gen Z.”

In his words of gratitude on Sunday, the CM offered special commendation to these “cyber warriors.” Nevertheless, he also addressed this impatient demographic, who expect instant solutions to complex issues. His underlying message was clear: resolving intricate challenges may require time. Altering the current state of affairs is a gradual process, and patience is essential.

Yet, Vijay understands the sentiments of his supporters; delivering his initial speech in Tamil, he spoke with fervor and emphasis. With dramatic flair, he gestured to his watch, proclaiming, “The time for action begins now.” If this evokes memories of Amitabh Bachchan’s TV show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati,’ it’s hardly surprising.

Change and the Challenges Ahead

The youth of Tamil Nadu, alongside supporters of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), hold considerable faith in Vijay, believing he can effect genuine changes in their lives. This trust is particularly significant in a state that ranks among the top in India for both economic growth and Human Development Index measures. Given the Chief Minister’s statement regarding an empty state treasury, the implications for welfare schemes will be closely observed.

The electorate, seeking alternatives beyond traditional Dravidian parties, found hope in Vijay’s ability to carve a new path forward.

Lacking prior political or administrative experience, the Chief Minister must navigate his decisions with caution. Determining whom to rely on for guidance in political and administrative matters will be pivotal.

Can he, as one of his new colleagues in the government claimed, match the surprising success of bringing his party to power with equally impressive results?

Over the past two years, Vijay has pledged to uphold social justice and the principles of Periyar and Annadurai, while prioritizing the welfare of Dalits, backward classes, and marginalized communities. He is expected to live up to these commitments.

In contrast, Tamil Nadu’s political arena remains intensely competitive; with both major Dravidian parties currently out of power, they will be closely watching the developments in the new government. A single misstep could be detrimental, particularly given the Chief Minister’s perceived lack of political experience.

Recent observers noted that when the TVK founder met Governor Rajendra Arlekar for the first time, he deviated from tradition by not bringing a bouquet of flowers—an established gesture of political decorum.

Some might dismiss this as a minor oversight, yet etiquette is significant, and public scrutiny can be unforgiving.

As we reflect on this moment, the victory of the TVK stands as a reminder that many leaders have ascended to the Chief Minister’s office promising change and transformation. While articulating transparency, accountability, and prudent resource management is straightforward, maintaining public favor is a fragile endeavor.

There can be no gap between what is said and what is done, at least from the public’s perspective; otherwise, come election time, the electorate will not hesitate to show them the door.
