Government dismisses mandatory work-from-home for IT sector following PM Modi's request, sources reveal.
The Indian government is not contemplating any directive or advisory regarding the work-from-home (WFH) policy for the IT sector, according to sources speaking to CNBC-TV18.

These sources indicated that there is no necessity for any formal guidance for the IT industry, as many companies have already implemented remote and hybrid work arrangements for their employees.

These comments follow Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for austerity, encouraging citizens to conserve energy and resources by using public transport and adopting WFH practices during the ongoing crisis in West Asia. Additionally, the PM advised the public against purchasing gold and silver for a year.
Sources clarified that PM Modi’s statement was merely an appeal, emphasizing that no official mandates are currently under consideration.

No restrictions on electronics imports in India

Further sources noted that the government is not planning to impose any restrictions on the import of electronic goods within the country.

For the financial year 2026, India’s electronics imports amounted to $116.17 billion.

Officials explained that these imports serve productive purposes, including manufacturing and exports.

Although high memory costs may lead to increased electronics imports, the government acknowledges that artificial intelligence (AI) servers are essential for developing data centres and technology infrastructure in India. Therefore, no restrictions on electronics imports are being considered.
