Finn Allen Reflects on His Early Challenges in IPL 2026: 'I was placing excessive pressure on myself'
New Zealand opener Finn Allen has shared that being dropped midway through the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 allowed him to regain his form, following a spectacular match-winning performance against the Gujarat Titans (GT) in Kolkata.

Allen entered this tournament after a brilliant century against South Africa in the semi-finals of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

However, Allen’s IPL journey began with only 81 runs from five matches, leading to a three-match absence as KKR experimented with their lineup in search of victories.
On Saturday, he delivered an explosive 93 runs off just 35 balls, keeping KKR’s playoff hopes alive.

“At the tournament’s outset, I was applying excessive pressure on myself to perform. For a time, I was probably a shallower version of myself, and it was all self-imposed,” Allen remarked in a post-match interview following their 29-run victory.

“Being out of the team allowed me to relax, take a breath, and view things from a fresh perspective.

“I love playing cricket and batting, but I wasn’t enjoying it as much as I should have because of the pressure I was imposing on myself.”

Since his return against Sunrisers Hyderabad, the opener has been in formidable form, accumulating 240 runs in four innings, which includes a 47-ball unbeaten century and 93 runs in his last three matches.

Allen stated that the brief hiatus enabled him to return with a clearer mindset.

“Those few games off truly benefited me. It’s definitely a great lesson learned,” he said.

The 27-year-old reiterated that his focus now is on remaining relaxed and enjoying the sport rather than fixating on outcomes.

“When I’m relaxed and enjoying myself, I watch the ball more intently, get into better positions, and ultimately become a better cricketer,” Allen explained.

“The pressure is something I create for myself. There’s no real pressure in sports. We’re fortunate to do what we love, so the pressure was all on me.” He hit 10 sixes during his innings, with 76 of his 93 runs coming from boundaries in his impactful performance.

“It’s all about maintaining my intent early, getting into good positions. If the ball’s there, I aim for four or six, and if not, I work on rotating the strike. My goal is to get into stronger positions to enhance my consistency,” he added.

KKR’s next match is against the Mumbai Indians (MI) at home on May 20.
