Assam Government Formation: BJP Legislative Party to Convene Today to Finalize New Cabinet
The BJP legislature party in Assam is scheduled to convene on May 10 to officially elect its leader and finalize the new cabinet ahead of the swearing-in ceremony planned for May 12 in Guwahati, as reported by various sources.

Current Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is anticipated to secure a second consecutive term following the BJP-led NDA’s decisive win in the 2026 Assembly elections.

The NDA’s considerable victory in Assam, where the alliance captured 102 of the 126 seats—with the BJP winning 82 and allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) each gaining 10 seats—has paved the way for government formation.
The BJP is also likely to deliberate on the cabinet structure, ensuring alliance partners are included in the new ministry as part of power-sharing deals.

The Congress party has been reduced to 19 seats, despite leading a larger opposition coalition, signifying the BJP’s third consecutive term in the state and its strongest showing in Assam to date.

Sarma, who first assumed office as chief minister in May 2021 after the BJP’s re-election, has solidified his position as the party’s principal figure in Assam’s political landscape over the last five years.

Under his stewardship, the BJP has broadened its organizational influence across Upper Assam, Barak Valley, and Bodoland, while focusing on welfare and infrastructure-driven campaigns.

The legislature party meeting will take place in the company of BJP central observers JP Nadda and Nayab Singh Saini, after which NDA legislators are expected to approach the Governor to formally claim the right to form the government.

Talks regarding the cabinet composition are ongoing, with alliance partners AGP and BPF likely to receive positions in the new government, according to reports.

The swearing-in ceremony on May 12 is anticipated to be attended by senior BJP figures, chief ministers from NDA-led states, and party members from across Assam.

In addition to Sarma taking the oath for another term, a new council of ministers is expected to be inaugurated, with the BJP aiming to ensure a balance of regional, ethnic, and alliance representation in the cabinet.
