Tamil Nadu Government Formation Live News Updates: Turmoil envelops Tamil Nadu as DMK’s Stalin claims the AIADMK sought its backing to prevent TVK chief Vijay from gaining power, after Governor RV Arlekar denied Vijay the opportunity to form a government in a hung Assembly. Stay tuned for live updates here:
This development arises amid rumors of a potential alliance between the DMK and AIADMK, long-standing adversaries in the Dravidian political landscape, following a divided mandate in the recent Assembly elections.
Inside the DMK, factions led by Udhayanidhi Stalin reportedly harbor concerns that Vijay could emulate the influence once wielded by former chief minister MG Ramachandran, widely known as MGR.
Political maneuvers accelerated after Tamil Nadu Governor RV Arlekar turned down Vijay’s request to establish the government, citing the party’s failure to demonstrate majority support in the 234-member Assembly.
TVK contends, however, that there are precedents where the largest single party was invited to form a government without an immediate majority. The party remains optimistic about proving its strength in the Assembly.
The Tamil Nadu Elections of 2026 resulted in a hung Assembly, with TVK emerging as the largest party with 108 seats. The DMK secured 59 seats while the AIADMK captured 47. Congress later pledged support to TVK, although the party still falls five seats short of the 118 needed for a majority.
In the meantime, leaders from CPI, CPI(M), and VCK are said to have met with Stalin to deliberate on the shifting political landscape, while AIADMK chief Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS) is anticipated to seek a meeting with the Governor on Friday, May 8.
