Chicago hospital shooting: One officer dead, another in critical condition.
A police officer has lost their life, and another is in critical condition after an individual in police custody opened fire while receiving treatment at a Chicago hospital on Saturday, officials reported.

“Officers transported an individual to the Swedish hospital for observation, during which two of our officers were shot,” Chicago police Superintendent Larry Snelling stated during a press conference in the afternoon. “One was critically injured and later pronounced dead. The second officer is currently fighting for his life in the hospital behind us.”

Authorities indicated that the officer remained in critical condition Saturday evening.
The suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, fled the Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital following the shooting at approximately 10:50 a.m. Police later apprehended him and recovered a firearm.
The hospital confirmed that its campus was placed on lockdown, ensuring the safety of patients and staff at the facility.

“Today is an incredibly difficult moment for our city. It’s a tragedy,” remarked Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson during the news conference. The city is offering mental health support services to assist police officers in performing their duties, he added.

Snelling mentioned that an investigation is currently underway and could not divulge further details. However, the hospital stated in a Facebook post that an individual in law enforcement custody was brought to the emergency department for treatment and was “wanded upon arrival,” adhering to protocol. Law enforcement escorted him at all times, the hospital clarified.

It further noted that the man later discharged shots at the law enforcement officers before exiting the hospital building, where he was ultimately apprehended.

“Those officers were present as transport officers,” Snelling explained, referencing the deceased officer and the injured one. A weapon was retrieved, he confirmed.

He also mentioned that the names of the officers have not been released to ensure their families have been informed first. One officer was 38 years old and had been with the department for a decade; the other was 57 with 21 years of service, Snelling detailed.
