Baramati, Rahuri, Umreth Bypolls: Voter Participation, Contestants, and Their Motivations

Polling for the Baramati and Rahuri by-elections in Maharashtra wrapped up peacefully, with Baramati achieving an average voter turnout of 56.56% and Rahuri recording 54.80%.

As of 3 pm, Gujarat’s Umreth noted a voter turnout of 46.66%. In Maharashtra, Rahuri had a turnout of 39.60%, while Baramati registered 40.36% participation.

As of 11 am, the voter turnout for Baramati and Rahuri was 20.55% and 18.22%, respectively, with Umreth at 25.65% by that time.

By 9 am, Baramati and Rahuri recorded turnouts of 8.01% and 6.39%. Meanwhile, Umreth had a turnout of 10% at the same hour.

Why are bypolls taking place in Baramati, Rahuri, and Umreth?Baramati

The Baramati Assembly seat, traditionally held by NCP leader Ajit Pawar, became vacant following his passing.

Sunetra Pawar, the late Deputy Chief Minister’s wife, is contesting from Baramati.

While there are 23 other candidates, the Congress chose not to field a candidate against Sunetra as a token of respect for the deceased NCP leader.

“For the past 60 years, the people of Baramati have supported the ‘Pawar’ family. This election is occurring without Dada, and the citizens have decided to vote in his honor,” Sunetra stated to ANI.

Rahuri

BJP MLA Shivaji Kardile passed away last October, leading to a vacancy. The BJP has nominated Akshay Kardile to compete against NCP (Sharad Pawar) candidate Govind Mokate and Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi’s Santosh Chalke.

Umreth

The Umreth assembly seat in Gujarat’s Anand district became vacant after the demise of BJP leader Govind Parmar in March 2026, at the age of 72. The party has put forward his son, Harshad Parmar, to face Congress’ Bhrigurajsinh Chauhan.

The results for the by-elections will be announced on May 4, coinciding with the vote counting for Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Assam, Puducherry, and Kerala.
