West Bengal Elections: ADR Report Indicates 23% of Candidates Face Criminal Charges, 22% Are Millionaires in Second Phase
Approximately 23% of candidates participating in the second phase of the West Bengal assembly elections have acknowledged having criminal cases against them, while 22% are millionaires, as reported by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR).

Of the 1,445 candidates evaluated, 338 (23%) have declared criminal cases and 295 (20%) have disclosed serious criminal charges, according to the report.

The report indicates that 16 candidates have revealed murder charges, while 80 are facing attempted murder allegations.
From the major parties, 102 (72%) out of 141 candidates surveyed from the BJP, 49 (35%) out of 142 candidates from TMC, 51 (51%) out of 100 candidates from CPI(M), and 37 (26%) out of 142 candidates from Congress have reported criminal cases in their election affidavits, according to the ADR report.

Among the 142 constituencies, 63 (44%) are categorized as “red alert” constituencies, with three or more candidates having criminal cases, it noted.

Out of the 1,445 candidates, 321 (22%) possess assets exceeding 1 crore.

Looking at major parties, 103 (73%) out of 142 candidates from TMC, 73 (52%) out of 141 candidates from BJP, 36 (25%) out of 142 candidates from Congress, and 33 (33%) out of 100 candidates from CPI(M) have declared assets valued at over 1 crore, as per ADR.

The average assets per candidate participating in the West Bengal assembly elections 2026 Phase II is 1.21 crore, it concluded.

For major parties, the average assets per candidate for the 142 TMC candidates analyzed is 5.05 crore, for 141 BJP candidates is 3.28 crore, for 100 CPI(M) is 1.22 crore, and for 142 Congress candidates is 1.04 crore, the report indicated.
