DMRC Initiates Mid-Life Overhaul of Blue Line Trains, with Upgrades for 70 Trains to Roll Out in Phases
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has initiated a mid-life refurbishment program for its Blue Line trains, focusing on enhancing passenger safety, comfort, and the overall travel experience.

In an official statement, DMRC announced that the initiative aims to upgrade its oldest rolling stock (RS-1) trains with modern technology and improved facilities, ensuring continued reliability and compliance with current standards.

As part of this initiative, DMRC is refurbishing 70 trains across the Red and Blue Lines in a phased approach. In the first phase, 12 trains have already been enhanced, followed by 18 trains refurbished in the second phase. Work on an additional nine trains is set to commence shortly, with another nine to follow. By November 2027, a total of 22 Blue Line trains will be refurbished in the third phase.
The trains undergoing upgrades were inducted between 2002 and 2007 and have completed nearly 19 to 24 years of service. DMRC stated that these trains are being modernized with updated systems and features to meet the latest rolling stock standards.

The refurbishment includes enhancements to both interiors and onboard systems. Passenger areas and driver cabins have been repainted to address wear and tear, and electrical panels have been upgraded for improved performance and reliability.

Newly installed systems include IP-based Passenger Announcement and Passenger Information Systems (PA-PIS), CCTV systems, and LCD-based Dynamic Route Maps with display screens providing real-time route, time, and arrival information. These systems also facilitate communication between passengers and train operators in emergency situations.

Safety improvements encompass the installation of a fire detection system equipped with smoke and heat detectors in all coaches. Additionally, DMRC has replaced older relays and miniature circuit breakers with advanced units to enhance operational safety.

Furthermore, mobile and laptop charging points have been introduced across all coaches. New jumper cables and connectors have been installed to support upgraded systems and prepare for future enhancements.

DMRC stated that this initiative is part of its broader strategy to modernize older trains, aligning them with newer rolling stock standards while ensuring safe and reliable metro services.
