The Titans achieved a clear victory on Wednesday night, but breached Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct regarding over-rate violations. As this was the franchise’s first offence this season, the punishment was purely monetary, with Gill bearing the cost as the team’s captain.
GT is now the second team to incur penalties for slow over-rate this season. Shreyas Iyer, who captains Punjab Kings, has already been fined twice for similar infractions.
Notably, a recent change in this season’s regulations indicates that repeated offences won’t automatically result in match bans, differing from past IPL rules where a third violation could lead to a captain being sidelined for a match.
Disciplinary measures have not been exclusive to captains. Abhishek Sharma from Sunrisers Hyderabad was also penalised, forfeiting 25% of his match fee and receiving a demerit point for dissent during a match against Kolkata Knight Riders. While the IPL did not provide detailed information, the situation is thought to be related to a controversial catch involving Varun Chakaravarthy.
Gill led the charge with a superb 70 off 45 balls, helping the Gujarat Titans post an impressive 210/4 after being put into bat, a score that ultimately secured their inaugural win of IPL 2026.
