Rain and Snow Expected in Jammu & Kashmir Until April 10: Travel Tips to Consider

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has released a new weather warning for Jammu and Kashmir, predicting rainfall in the lowlands and snowfall in elevated areas during early April.

Travelers intending to visit the Union Territory should exercise caution, as unstable weather conditions are anticipated to continue over the next few days. These conditions are expected to last until April 10 because of an active western disturbance.

Western Disturbance to Influence Weather Changes
As per the IMD, the Western Himalayan region will experience sporadic precipitation, with cloudy conditions dominating the Union Territory. Light to moderate rainfall, coupled with fresh snowfall, is forecasted for higher elevations.

Weather analysts have also noted that a strong western disturbance is likely to affect the region within the next 36 hours, bringing widespread rain and snow.

In a post on X, Kashmir Weather alerted residents about the approaching Western Disturbance in the Union Territory. “A significant Western Disturbance is poised to impact Jammu and Kashmir in the next 36 hours, bringing widespread moderate to heavy rain showers to the UT. Higher elevations and mountain routes, including Zojila, Sinthan Top, Mughal Road, Sadhna Top, and Razdan Top, are expected to receive fresh snowfall,” it stated.

Reasons for the Sudden Weather Change

Experts explain that the abrupt change in weather is due to a new western disturbance originating from the Mediterranean region. This system is introducing moisture into the Himalayas, resulting in rainfall in the plains and snowfall in mountainous zones.

Regions Most Likely to Be Affected

Notable tourist spots such as Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Pahalgam are anticipated to receive fresh snowfall. Meanwhile, rain is expected across the Kashmir Valley and parts of Jammu. High-altitude passes may face slippery roads and limited visibility, which could hinder travel.

Rain and snow are likely to disrupt road transport, particularly in hilly and mountainous regions. Diminished visibility and slippery conditions may lead to temporary closures or delays on critical routes.

Travel Advisory for Visitors

Authorities have urged travelers to remain vigilant in light of the shifting weather conditions. Here are some recommendations:

– Regularly monitor real-time weather updates

– Exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel to high-altitude areas

– Carry sufficient winter clothing and essentials

– Stay prepared for delays or cancellations

– Plan itineraries with flexibility
