2026 Cherry Blossom Outlook in Japan: A Traveler’s Guide to Sakura Season

Cherry Blossom Picnics in Japan Feature Middle Eastern Sweet Buns
Japan welcomes spring with delicate hues of blush pink, and the 2026 Cherry Blossom Forecast provides a guide for travelers to fully enjoy this enchanting season. The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO), referring to predictions from the Japan Weather Association, has detailed how the sakura bloom will gradually progress from the southern regions to the northern parts of the country.

For those eager to witness the initial blossoms, Okinawa is the first stop. As Japan’s southernmost prefecture, it typically sees blooms beginning as early as February, offering a serene environment for hanami amidst turquoise waters and subtropical foliage. By late March and throughout April, most of Japan enters its peak cherry blossom period, with parks, castles, and riverbanks hosting vibrant seasonal festivities.

Travelers who miss the main bloom can venture further north. In Hokkaido, blossoms last into May, followed by the stunning “Shiba Sakura,” pink moss flowers that mimic cherry blossoms and create vivid blankets of color. The peak for the moss pink usually occurs in May, while lavender fields begin to flourish from July onwards, making Hokkaido a year-round floral paradise.
JNTO points out several lesser-known viewing spots for those looking to escape the crowds, including Okinawa, Hokkaido, the Tohoku region, the Nikko Kaido Cherry Blossom Trail in Tochigi, Yoshino in Nara, and Mount Noro in Hiroshima.

The area around Mount Fuji offers a blend of blossoms and breathtaking scenery. The Sagamiko Sakura festival, anticipated to take place from around February 27 to April 12, features approximately 2,000 cherry blossom trees within Sagamiko Mori Mori Amusement Park, along with seasonal attractions and camping options. From about April 11 to May 24, the Fuji Shibasakura festival near Lake Motosu will display over 800,000 pink moss plants, framed by views of Mount Fuji.

For a more reflective experience, Minobu Sakura, typically held from early to late April, takes place at Kuonji Temple, an ancient temple over 800 years old located in the Minobu mountain area, renowned for its Shidare-zakura (weeping cherry blossoms). Guests can enjoy a seven-minute ropeway ride to reach an elevated vantage point and prayer area overlooking the blossoms.

With the bloom occurring over several months and across various regions, the 2026 forecast provides travelers with flexibility—whether planning an early-season getaway to Okinawa, a classic spring visit in April, or a late bloom experience in Hokkaido.
