Vijay to Lead the First Non-Dravidian Administration in the State

Live Updates on Tamil Nadu CM Oath Ceremony | TVK leader Vijay is set to take the oath as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on May 10, having garnered support from VCK and IUML, allowing the party to surpass the majority threshold in the 234-member Assembly and concluding the prolonged uncertainty regarding the state’s government formation.

Live Updates on Tamil Nadu CM Oath Ceremony | The Governor, Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, appointed TVK founder and leader Chandrasekar Joseph Vijay as Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister on Saturday, with the oath-taking scheduled for May 10 after securing enough support to achieve a majority in the 234-member Assembly.

At 10 am on Sunday, Vijay will take his oath at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai, as per a statement from Lok Bhavan.

The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), which succeeded in winning 108 seats in its first Assembly election, was initially 10 seats short of the majority needed (118). The stalemate was resolved when the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), each with two MLAs, provided “unconditional support” to Vijay on Saturday.

After receiving support letters from VCK and IUML, Vijay visited Governor Arlekar at Lok Bhavan, accompanied by leaders from Congress and other supporting parties, including the Left and VCK. Subsequently, the Governor presented Vijay with a letter appointing him as chief minister, instructing him to form the government and demonstrate his majority by May 13.

Both VCK and IUML indicated they would offer “outside support” and would not participate in the government. Allies of the DMK, including VCK, affirmed their commitment to the DMK-led alliance.

Vijay updated the Governor about his election as the leader of the TVK Legislature Party and submitted supporting letters from Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK, and IUML.

With the coalition support, the TVK’s strength increased to 120, surpassing the majority threshold by two.

The political shifts also led to allegations from NDA ally AMMK, which accused the TVK of engaging in horse-trading and utilizing a “forged” support letter from its sole MLA. The TVK dismissed these claims as “false news,” releasing a video that purportedly shows MLA Kamaraj voluntarily endorsing the support letter.

Celebrations erupted among TVK supporters, who exploded firecrackers and distributed sweets at the party office.
