USGS Imagery Topo Base Map to retire November 16, 2026
1 min readThe United States Geological Survey announced that its Imagery Topo Base Map service will be retired on November 16, 2026. The service combined aerial imagery with topographic map features including roads, place names, and contour lines into a single map view. The agency said it has been a popular resource for users who want to view topographic details on top of real-world imagery.
The National Geospatial Program said the retirement will enable its ongoing effort to modernize how it delivers geospatial data. The agency said that as older services are retired, resources can be focused on building newer, more flexible tools that better meet today's needs. The agency said the goal is to better meet the needs of users who depend on geospatial information.
The agency said that users who rely on the service in their own applications, maps, or workflows were given notice 30 days in advance. The agency said this advance notice will give users time to update their systems and find alternative sources. The agency said understanding that users rely on this service in their own applications, maps, or workflows was a key factor in providing this advance notice.
After November 16, 2026, the USGS Imagery Topo Base Map service will not be available. The agency said any application, map, or tool that references this service will not display the service data once the service is retired. The agency recommended that users update their applications or maps to use a different source before that date.
The agency said The National Map continues to offer a variety of data and map services that may meet user needs. The retirement was announced Tuesday 13 October 2026.
