USGS announces metadata training for data managers in October

1 min read

The US Geological Survey announced Wednesday that its Science Data Management Branch will host a Metadata 101 training session on Thursday, October 29, 2026. The virtual event begins at 12:00pm ET and 10:00am MT. The training is designed for USGS authors and data managers. The agency encouraged researchers at science centers to share information about the training with other colleagues who may benefit from participation.

According to the agency, the session will cover the who, what, where, when, and how of metadata creation. Presenters Ricardo McClees-Funinan and Amanda Liford from Science Data Management will lead the training. The presenters will also demonstrate the Metadata Wizard application. The application is used for creating, editing, and validating metadata. The USGS said the walkthrough will help participants understand how to use the tool for their data release needs.

The USGS Science Analytics and Synthesis ScienceBase Data Release Team is hosting the event. The training is suitable for those new to metadata creation who do not know where to start. It is also suitable for those who want to refresh themselves on USGS metadata requirements and recommendations before their next data release.

The USGS said interested participants should email the ScienceBase Data Release Team at sciencebase_datarelease@usgs.gov to receive a calendar invitation for either training. The agency asked that those sharing the announcement forward the email to other researchers at their science center.
