As summer gets closer, people are looking for the best places to unwind during their well-earned vacations. 

When planning a trip, affordability, comfort, and of course, fun are all factors to consider. Luckily, TripAdvisor’s Annual Summer Travel Index helps travelers find the most popular destinations for getaways. 

Data surveyed from the world’s largest travel guidance platform discovered that this year, a mix of historic metropolitan cities and relaxing beach stays are what people are seeking for both international and domestic travel, with younger generations taking the lead in overall travel.

Top global summer travel destinations for U.S. citizens

Cancun, Mexico

Cancun reigns supreme above all getaways with its white sand beaches, vibrant nightlife and endless opportunities for relaxation and adventure along the Caribbean Sea. This is the second year in a row Cancun has topped Tripadvisor’s list as the top summer travel destination for Americans.

Paris, France

It’s no surprise that the City of Lights remains a top location for U.S. travelers. Aside from the obvious attractions like the iconic Eiffel Tower and Champs Elysees, Paris is sure to leave one enchanted by its historic charm, opulent city life and of course, world-renowned culinary cuisine. 

London, United Kingdom

For trending destinations that are seeing growth in popularity, Tripadvisor found that places with warmer climates dominate both domestic and international lists. Domestically, Florida tops the list for growing destinations, but more remote places like Big Sur and North Wildwood are sparking interest for nature lovers. Mexico once again takes first place for fastest growing international destinations.

Punta Sam, Mexico

Punta Sam is on the rise in popularity, particularly for those who enjoy spending their vacation out on the sea. This location is known for its boat-based activities along the Mexican Caribbean, such as boat tours and sunset cruises, but also offers inland fun with horseback riding on the beach and golf. 

Noord, Aruba

Palm Beach, Arashi Beach and Hadicurari Beach are just a few of the impossibly blue beaches where travelers who enjoy water sport activities can spend their days in Noord. Noord boasts not only relaxing beaches, but also a vibrant nightlife and unique inland experiences for visitors. 

Puerto Rico, Spain

North Wildwood, New Jersey

For New Jerseyans, a nice getaway doesn’t have to be far at all. The Garden State lands a spot on Tripadvisors trending destinations list with North Wildwood, a destination admired for its free beaches, amusement parks along the boardwalk and the picturesque Hereford Inlet Lighthouse. 

Dewey Beach, Delaware 

Dewey Beach offers the best nightlife in Delaware, but also affordable beach getaways for travelers of all sorts. The live music scene, beach activities and unique food spots offers something for everyone.

Gen Z Embraces Travel 

To a majority of travelers (83%), experiences are a priority for vacations. Nearly 90% of those surveyed said they have at least five activities planned for trips. Gen Z aims even higher with at six or more activities compared to older respondents (14% vs. older age group average of 9%). Gen Z and millennials are also more interested in exploring new cultures and taking on adventures compared to older generations, leading in those most likely to travel in general.
