Tamil Nadu Elections: Congress Pledges 300,000 Jobs and Universal Basic Income in Campaign Manifesto
The Indian National Congress (INC) on Thursday, April 8, unveiled its manifesto for the forthcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly election 2026, which includes a variety of welfare and governance initiatives such as a Universal Basic Income scheme, the creation of three lakh government jobs, and the recruitment of 10,000 women commandos into the police force.

The manifesto, titled “Transforming Tamil Nadu,” was presented in Chennai, attended by Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, Congress MP Karti Chidambaram, and Tamil Nadu Congress chief K Selvaperunthagai.

The document emphasizes employment creation, public safety, healthcare, and enhancements in infrastructure and law enforcement.
Universal Basic Income and employment initiative

A central promise in the manifesto is the launch of a Universal Basic Income (UBI) scheme. The party has committed to providing 2,000 each month to every family, with funds directly transferred to the bank accounts of women holding ration cards.

Additionally, the Congress has introduced a “3 lakh govt jobs in 300 days” campaign to combat unemployment.

This plan involves filling all vacant government positions within 300 days, releasing department-specific vacancy lists, and implementing a clear recruitment timeline to enhance hiring processes across departments.

Police recruitment and public safety initiatives

Public safety is a major focus of the manifesto. The party aims to recruit 40,000 new police personnel, including 10,000 women commandos to bolster law enforcement capabilities.

The document also commits to creating a world-class integrated emergency call centre linking police, fire services, child helplines, and ambulance services, with “Dial 100” as the unified emergency contact number.

Tourism, health, and infrastructure plans

The manifesto details a strategy to develop Tamil Nadu as a Global Spiritual Tourist Hub by promoting historical worship sites, offering multilingual guides, and organizing heritage tours.

Regarding healthcare and animal welfare, the party aims for “Rabies Free TN” through 100% dog vaccination and sterilization by 2030.

Moreover, Congress promises an infrastructure initiative aimed at ensuring pothole-free roads and sets a target of achieving “Near Zero Road Accident Deaths.”

Tamil Nadu Elections 2026 

Tamil Nadu will hold elections in a single phase on April 23 across all 234 constituencies, with counting slated for May 4.

The main contest is anticipated between the coalition led by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), which includes the Congress, and the National Democratic Alliance spearheaded by the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), along with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK).

Actor-turned-politician Vijay is also entering the electoral scene with his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), potentially introducing a third dynamic to the competition.
