Shreyas Iyer expected to take over as India’s T20I captain from Suryakumar Yadav, according to reports.

Punjab achieves historic chase against Delhi, overcoming KL Rahul's century.
Shreyas Iyer is poised to assume the role of India’s T20I captain from Suryakumar Yadav, as reported by The Times of India. This decision is part of the team’s management’s long-term strategy to develop the future of the shortest format.

Although Suryakumar has recently captained India in T20 matches, the report indicated that the selectors and management are increasingly recognizing Iyer’s leadership qualities and consistency. The captain of the Punjab Kings has bolstered his reputation during IPL 2026 through his strategic mindset and composed leadership style.

The report also mentioned that a decision regarding India’s future T20I leadership is anticipated post-IPL 2026, with Iyer positioned as a leading candidate for the role.
Iyer’s captaincy experience has expanded over the years. He previously led the Delhi Capitals to their first IPL final in 2020 and steered the Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024 before taking over the Punjab Kings this season.

However, the BCCI has not yet provided any official confirmation regarding a leadership transition in the Indian T20I setup.
