This development comes ahead of the upcoming tours to Ireland and England starting this month. The Mumbai Indians (MI) player had previously led the team to victory in the T20 World Cup in March, marking the team’s last international appearance before the onset of the IPL season.
“The selection committee, BCCI, and team management, along with coach Gautam Gambhir, have concluded that India should opt for a new leader moving forward. While Surya’s captaincy brought success in the T20 World Cup, they believe it’s time to transition considering his current form and future prospects,” a senior BCCI official stated to the Indian Express.
He added, “He will not be selected moving forward, and this decision will be communicated to Surya shortly.”
At 35, he had a disappointing performance in the World Cup, tallying just 252 runs throughout the tournament, which included a duck in the final match.
Prior to this, the past year saw him struggling to find consistency with the bat across different conditions and opponents.
A strong performance in the IPL could have prevented this potential removal, but the short-format specialist fell short, delivering limited contributions with the bat for the five-time champions.
Over 13 matches this season, Suryakumar managed only 270 runs at an average of 20.77.
With options like Sanju Samson and Shreyas Iyer emerging as candidates for India’s next T20I captain, Axar Patel served as vice-captain during the World Cup campaign, though his disappointing performances for Delhi Capitals (DC) in IPL 2026 leave his prospects uncertain.
