Punjab captain Shreyas Iyer was left searching for answers after his team successfully chased down a record 265-run target with seven balls remaining. “I’m honestly out of words,” Iyer remarked, leading by example with an unbeaten 71.
“We had discussed how in previous matches, we chased scores around 220–225 with two overs to spare, so our mindset was quite similar.” In pursuit of their first IPL title, Punjab solidified their lead at the top of the standings following their sixth victory in seven matches, while Delhi currently sits sixth at the season’s midpoint.
Delhi appeared to hold the advantage after Rahul spearheaded their batting with a remarkable 67-ball innings that featured nine sixes and 16 fours.
Rahul and Nitish Rana (91) combined for a staggering 220 runs in their extraordinary 96-ball partnership, pushing Delhi to a total of 264-2, their highest ever in the 10-team league.
Facing a challenging target, Punjab openers Priyansh Arya (43) and Prabhsimran (76) matched Delhi’s aggression from the start.
They accumulated 116 runs during the initial powerplay overs, exhibiting bold power-hitting to set the stage for a successful chase.
Iyer launched seven sixes in a 36-ball onslaught to steer his team to victory, benefitting from two costly drops.
The right-hander was let off twice, at scores of 28 and 35, with Karun Nair unable to hold onto both catches.
“Considering the wicket, if you don’t support your bowlers and continue to squander so many opportunities, I believe we deserved to lose,” Delhi captain Axar Patel stated bluntly regarding his team’s fielding performance.
Delhi fast bowler Lungi Ngidi was taken to the hospital in an ambulance after suffering a head injury while fielding. The South African was reported to be stable and expected to be discharged soon, according to organizers.
