Planning a trip to Indonesia? UPI payments will soon be accepted there as well!
Indian tourists heading to Indonesia might soon enjoy smoother digital payment options, as India and Indonesia have reached an agreement to merge the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) with Indonesia’s payment infrastructure.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi revealed this development following bilateral discussions with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto in Jakarta on Tuesday (July 7).

“We are pleased that India’s UPI is on track to integrate with Indonesia’s payment system. This will enhance both business operations and travel experiences,” Modi stated in his media briefing.
Once implemented, this connection is expected to allow travelers and businesses to conduct cross-border retail payments more easily through their local payment applications, minimizing dependence on cash and currency exchanges for daily transactions.

This announcement coincided with the signing of nearly a dozen agreements between the two nations aimed at bolstering cooperation in various sectors, including critical minerals, technology, food security, pharmaceuticals, maritime security, and defense.

Countries where UPI is available

Indonesia will be added to a growing roster of nations where India is extending the reach of UPI-based payments. UPI-linked payment acceptance is already operational in countries like Singapore, the UAE, France, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Bhutan, and Nepal, with India actively seeking similar cross-border payment collaborations with several other countries.

The UPI expansion is part of India’s larger initiative to enhance digital payment accessibility for Indian travelers and businesses abroad, while facilitating quicker and more cost-effective cross-border transactions.
