Paris Saint-Germain triumphs over Flamengo to claim FIFA Intercontinental Cup victory.
On Wednesday night, Paris Saint-Germain made history by becoming the first French club to triumph in a FIFA competition, clinching victory in a penalty shootout against Flamengo to secure the FIFA Intercontinental Cup Qatar 2025™ presented by Aramco.

In their inaugural meeting in a FIFA competition, Les Rouge et Bleu showcased their strength against the Brazilian team and ensured a triumphant end to 2025, adding yet another title to their UEFA Champions League success.

In front of a full stadium and following a fiercely competitive beginning, it was PSG’s Khvicha Kvaratskhelia who unlocked the scoring in the 38th minute, seizing on a low cross from Désiré Doué, which was inadvertently redirected to him by Flamengo’s goalkeeper, Agustín Rossi, during his clearance attempt.
However, the South American champions did not succumb to PSG’s power; instead, they returned for the second half brimming with determination. This effort paid off in the 62nd minute when a penalty was awarded for a foul by Marquinhos in the box. With his signature hop, skip, and jump, Jorginho confidently netted the ball, leveling the match and igniting wild celebrations among the traveling Flamengo supporters behind the goal.

The score remained tied throughout the rest of the game and extra time, despite both teams striving for victory. In front of their traveling fans, PSG eventually triumphed 2-1 following a thrilling shootout, where six of the nine penalties were either missed or saved. Matvei Safonov emerged as the hero by saving Luiz Araújo’s decisive penalty.

Despite their disappointment, Flamengo exits Qatar with two FIFA trophies to their name, having previously defeated Cruz Azul from Mexico and Pyramids from Egypt to secure the FIFA Derby of the Americas and FIFA Challenger Cup, respectively.

The clash concluded a remarkable trophy-winning streak for Filipe Luís’s side, who had claimed four titles in five matches before their setback in Al Rayyan. Along with the two FIFA trophies, Flamengo arrived in Doha having secured both the CONMEBOL Libertadores and Campeonato Brasileiro Série A titles in two of their last three competitions.

Nonetheless, it was a night of celebration for Luis Enrique’s team, and the tactical mastermind marked his own double victory in Doha, having been named The Best FIFA Men’s Coach 2025 at a prestigious awards ceremony the night before the tournament finale.

The match also marked the conclusion of the second of three major tournaments taking place in Qatar during November and December 2025. It capped another historic year for FIFA and the hosts of the FIFA World Cup 2022™, who successfully organized the FIFA U-17 World Cup 2025™ in November.

The calendar will wrap up with the third-place play-off and final of the FIFA Arab Cup 2025™, scheduled for 18 December at Khalifa International Stadium and Lusail Stadium, coinciding with Qatar National Day.
