OpenAI weighs legal action as discussions with Apple over ChatGPT and Siri partnership reach a standstill.

OpenAI partners with Google in groundbreaking cloud agreement amid AI competition, according to sources.
Apple’s partnership with OpenAI, which has lasted for two years, is facing challenges, as the AI company has not seen the anticipated advantages from its collaboration with the iPhone manufacturer and is considering potential legal measures, according to an insider on Thursday.

OpenAI is looking to fix its concerns with Apple without pursuing legal action, yet its legal team is currently collaborating with an external law firm to explore various options. These options might include formally notifying Apple of a contract breach without initiating a full lawsuit, the source noted, corroborating a Bloomberg News story regarding OpenAI’s internal discussions.

Apple has yet to respond to inquiries for comments.
In 2024, Apple revealed the incorporation of its “Apple Intelligence” technology within its applications, including Siri, alongside the introduction of OpenAI’s ChatGPT on its devices.
This partnership enables users to receive ChatGPT results via Siri, and iPhone users can also subscribe to ChatGPT memberships straight from the iOS settings menu.

Initially, OpenAI anticipated that this agreement would enhance ChatGPT subscriptions and facilitate greater integration within Apple’s apps; however, the partnership has since weakened, according to the report, which also mentioned that OpenAI’s efforts to renegotiate the agreement have reached a standstill.

This month, Bloomberg News indicated that Apple plans to permit users to choose from various third-party AI models, potentially diminishing OpenAI’s exclusive status within Apple’s software.

As part of this initiative, Apple is trialing integrations with both Anthropic’s Claude and Google Gemini, the report stated.

Apple’s engagement with additional AI providers is not the catalyst for the company’s legal considerations, the insider confirmed, emphasizing that the partnership was never intended to be exclusive from the outset.

Anticipated to drive Apple’s revamped Siri this year, Google’s Gemini is in focus. Apple is set to conduct its annual software developer conference in June, where further details about its AI strategies are likely to be disclosed.
