Nainar Nagendran takes over as Tamil Nadu BJP president, replacing Annamalai.
The Bharatiya Janata Party has appointed Nainar Nagenthiran as the new president of its Tamil Nadu unit, succeeding K Annamalai. This marks Nagenthiran as the 13th individual to hold this position in the state.

“BJP is a very significant party with over 1,000 MLAs and more than 300 MPs, and I am honored to be the state president of this party,” Nagenthiran remarked following the announcement.

This announcement follows the saffron party’s recent alliance with the AIADMK in light of the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly elections, officiated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

During the nomination process, Nagenthiran was joined by several key leaders, including K Annamalai. After submitting his papers, he mentioned that the nomination was made at the party’s suggestion. “You should consult senior leaders regarding the final decision.”

Union Home Minister Amit Shah confirmed the appointment, stating, “The Tamil Nadu BJP has received a nomination for the post of state president exclusively from Shri Nainar Nagendran.” He acknowledged Annamalai’s contributions to the party during his tenure as president of the Tamil Nadu BJP.

Who is Nainar Nagendran?

Nainar Nagendran began his political career with the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), winning the Tirunelveli Assembly seat in both 2001 and 2011 as an AIADMK candidate.

He served as a minister under Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa from 2001 to 2006.

In 2017, Nagendran transitioned from the AIADMK to join the BJP.

In the 2021 assembly elections, he ran as a BJP candidate, securing his seat as an MLA for the third time.

Nagendran also participated in the Lok Sabha elections in 2019 and 2024; however, he faced defeats in both attempts.

Since July 3, 2020, he has held the position of BJP state vice president.

Nagendran is known to have strong ties with top party leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
