Ghosh’s initial task with the senior men’s team will take place during the two-Test series against Sri Lanka, commencing on August 15.
This transition follows India’s subpar fielding performances during their tours in Ireland and England. The team struggled with dropped catches, fielding errors, and missed opportunities, all of which impacted their overall performance.
Who is Subhadeep Ghosh?
Subhadeep Ghosh, hailing from Assam, is a former domestic cricketer. Born in Digboi in 1968, Ghosh is set to take over as Team India’s new fielding coach.
Also known as Joy, he was a right-handed middle-order batsman and an off-spinner. Ghosh played for Assam and Railways in domestic cricket, making his debut during the 1994-95 season.
He participated in a total of 17 First-Class matches and 17 List A games, accumulating 316 runs in First-Class cricket and 307 runs in List A formats before concluding his domestic career. His final First-Class match occurred in 2004, and he wrapped up his List A career in 2005.
Subsequently, he ventured into coaching and became part of India’s cricket development framework. For the past six to seven years, he has been associated with the National Cricket Academy (NCA), where he worked alongside former India head coach Rahul Dravid.
He has mentored several Indian teams at various age levels, including the India Under-19 team, India A, and the Indian women’s team, serving as the fielding coach during the women’s tour of Australia in 2021. Most recently, he contributed to the India A support staff during the Sri Lanka tour.
Ghosh also has a background in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He was part of the Kolkata Knight Riders’ support team when they clinched the IPL title in 2014 and later served as the fielding coach for Delhi Capitals.
