Kapolei High School fashion program inspires budding designers

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Kapolei High School is helping train the next generation of fashion designers by teaching students how to create their own clothing and draft a business and marketing plan.

Fashion design teacher Jeselle Bassingthwaite along with students Dalton Lorenzo, Ava Tamayo, Blake Tesoro, Riley Thomas-Newell, Rebecca Shinn, Alyssa Clay and Ashley Cambra joined HNN’s Sunrise to share their experience and showcase their garment projects.

“I love helping students learn a new skill to create something with their hands as gifts to friends and family or for themselves,” Bassingthwaite said.

“I love that students learn how to appreciate handmade things and learn how to value them. And most importantly, it’s meaningful to watch them learn to be proud of their creations and of their own abilities.”

Bassingthwaite said many of her students don’t have previous sewing experience and begin by learning how to hand stitch. The class will be open to all grade levels in the fall.
