ISRO Successfully Conducts Tests on Gaganyaan Crew Module Systems
On Sunday, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) announced the successful completion of three significant tests related to the Gaganyaan crew module systems.

The first test focused on ensuring that the crew module achieves an upright position after splashing down in the sea, which is considered a critical safety requirement for the crew.

To achieve this, a cold-gas-based uprighting system was developed and put to the test.
”A comprehensive qualification test setup, incorporating all elements of the CMUS (crew module uprighting system), was established and successfully completed inflation tests for the primary inflation module. This involved using stored gas from a high-pressure gas bottle to inflate the flotation by operating the control valves,” stated ISRO.

The second test was aimed at assessing the separation of the umbilical mechanism that connects the crew module, where astronauts reside, to the service module, which supplies power and propulsion.

This mechanism consists of two components: CSU-1 on the crew module side and CSU-2 on the service module side.

During the Earth re-entry phase of the crew module, the service module detaches first after the CSU-1 disconnects. Then, just before re-entry, the CSU-2 is also released.

The “separation test of CSU-2 from the simulated crew module was conducted, demonstrating clean separation of CSU-2 along with the structural stability of the crew module panel and their interfaces,” the space agency reported.

The third test confirmed the structural integrity of the crew module during the apex cover separation event.

The apex cover safeguards the parachutes and associated subsystems throughout the mission and is detached before deploying the parachutes to slow down the crew module.
