On Tuesday, Qatar announced that mediators were advancing in their attempts to resolve the five-month war. However, Tehran has not confirmed any ongoing discussions, countering reports after several days of denial.
During a phone conversation, Trump and Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani discussed enhancing the chances for a durable agreement.
This development occurs as Iran remains firm on its stance regarding the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran insists on controlling inbound shipping and maintaining oversight over outbound traffic, with the authority to intervene if needed, as part of a temporary reopening plan being negotiated with Oman, according to a senior Iranian source cited by Reuters. “Tehran is unlikely to change its position,” the source noted.
Additionally, three sources informed Reuters that the US Army has depleted a significant portion of its global stockpile of precision long-range ATACMS and Precision Strike Missiles during the conflict, raising concerns about its preparedness for future military engagements.
In related news, India condemned the attack on the Indian-flagged commercial vessel MSV Faize Noore Oliya, which sank in the Red Sea off Yemen on August 4. All 13 Indian nationals on board were rescued. New Delhi labeled the ongoing assaults on commercial shipping as “deeply worrisome” and urged for the swift restoration of free and unimpeded navigation.
