No Fee Increase for Suburban and Short-Distance Travel
Railway authorities have confirmed that there will be no fare increases for suburban trains and Monthly Season Tickets (MSTs). Passengers traveling in ordinary class for distances up to 215 km will also experience no fare hikes.
Minor Increase for Longer Journeys
For those traveling beyond 215 km in ordinary class, fares will rise by 1 paise per kilometre.
In Mail and Express non-AC trains, the increase is 2 paise per kilometre, with AC class passengers subject to a similar rise of 2 paise per kilometre.
For example, a passenger traveling 500 km in a non-AC coach will incur an additional charge of just ₹10, making it a minimal impact for the majority of travelers.

Railways Projected to Earn ₹600 Crore from Fare Adjustment
Officials indicate this fare rationalisation is anticipated to generate around ₹600 crore for Indian Railways over the current year. This additional revenue will aid in managing increasing operational and manpower expenses.
Rising Costs Fuel This Decision
In the last decade, Indian Railways has significantly broadened its network and services. To handle increased train operations and enhance safety, personnel numbers have grown.
This escalation has resulted in manpower costs reaching ₹1.15 lakh crore, pension liabilities totaling ₹60,000 crore, and overall operational costs amounting to ₹2.63 lakh crore for 2024-25.
The Railways indicates that the slight fare increase, combined with an emphasis on greater cargo loading, will assist in managing these escalating costs.

Commitment to Safety and Efficiency
Officials stated that the additional resources will contribute to ongoing enhancements in safety and operational efficiency. India has now emerged as the second-largest cargo-carrying railway network globally.
The effective management of over 12,000 trains during the recent festive season was highlighted as evidence of improved efficiency and planning.
Limited Impact on Passengers
Indian Railways stressed that this rationalisation aims to maintain low costs for passengers, especially for commuters and short-distance travelers, while ensuring financial sustainability for the system.
The Railways will persist in efforts to manage expenses, enhance services, and uphold its social responsibilities without imposing a significant burden on passengers, officials affirmed.
