India to Stick with Plan to Rest Jasprit Bumrah Despite Defeat to England: Sources

ENG vs IND: Why Battling Jasprit Bumrah at Night with the Red Ball is Exceptionally Challenging
India will maintain its focus on Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness and adhere to the strategy of utilizing their pace spearhead in only three out of the five tests against England, despite losing the first match by five wickets on Tuesday, according to head coach Gautam Gambhir.

Bumrah, who opted out of the test captaincy to manage his workload following a four-month recovery from a back issue, emerged as India’s leading bowler with figures of 5-83 in the first innings of the dramatic Headingley clash but failed to take a wicket in the second.

The 31-year-old’s anticipated absence in two of the remaining four tests may lead India to field a less experienced attack against the hosts’ aggressive batting lineup, but Gambhir emphasized the importance of a long-term view.
“Managing Bumrah’s workload is our primary focus,” he told reporters. “There’s a lot of cricket ahead, and we understand his value to the team.

“It was already decided before this tour that he’d play three tests, but we’ll assess how his body responds. We haven’t finalized the other tests he will participate in.”

Seamer Prasidh Krishna claimed five wickets in the match but also conceded runs, while bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur took two wickets with a modest contribution of five runs with the bat. Despite the criticism aimed at both players, Gambhir expressed his support.

“Prasidh bowled exceptionally well,” Gambhir remarked.

“He secured us key wickets. We selected him because we believed he had something unique to offer. He utilized the bounce effectively in both innings and will continue to improve with experience.

“Shardul was utilized less, but that was due to Ravindra Jadeja’s excellent performance, which provided us with control. Shardul took two important wickets. I won’t say one bowler performed poorly while another excelled.

“We need to be more consistent… and these players will gain valuable experience.”

The second test is set to commence in Birmingham on July 2.
