During a media briefing, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated that India has consistently supported a dialogue and diplomatic approach to resolving conflicts and anticipates that the US-Iran agreement will foster lasting peace.
Misri noted that the situation in West Asia was a key topic during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s discussions at G7 outreach meetings and in his bilateral conversations with various global leaders.
PM Modi conveyed India’s aspiration for enduring peace and security in West Asia, he further mentioned.
US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed a significant peace Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that stipulates an immediate cessation of military actions, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and the lifting of the US naval blockade on Iranian ports.
Misri indicated that India has maintained close contact with many key players impacted by the conflict.
“We are in continuous communication with all those partners, and we are prepared to take whatever steps are necessary to assist in addressing the next phases,” he stated.
“India has welcomed the advancements that have occurred through the agreement between the US and Iran and hopes for a swift return to peace and stability in the region,” Misri remarked.
The Foreign Secretary highlighted India’s consistent emphasis on upholding freedom of navigation and unobstructed commerce through the international waterways in the region.
He mentioned that Modi specifically pointed out the importance of ensuring the safety and security of seafarers.
“He acknowledged how hundreds of thousands of Indian seafarers contribute significantly by serving on maritime platforms that benefit the global community and bolster international maritime trade, making their safety a widespread concern for the global community,” Misri stated.
“This was a point he raised not only during his remarks at the G7 summit outreach meetings but also in his bilateral discussions with various leaders,” he added.
Misri conveyed that India expects the peace agreement between the US and Iran to usher in lasting peace and stability in West Asia.
“India has historically advocated for dialogue and diplomacy as a means to resolve such conflicts. We have always expressed our willingness to contribute in any feasible way,” he mentioned.
“We maintain robust relationships with all the nations in the region,” he concluded.
