On Saturday, US President Donald Trump announced significant tariffs affecting eight European nations, connecting this decision to rising geopolitical tensions surrounding Greenland and reviving his long-held interest in acquiring the territory from Denmark.
In his statement, Trump asserted that the United States has been “subsidising Denmark, and all of the Countries of the European Union” for many years by not imposing tariffs, stating that “now, after centuries, it is time for Denmark to give back.”
He emphasized that Greenland is pivotal to global security matters, cautioning that “World Peace is at stake! China and Russia want Greenland, and there is nothing Denmark can do about it.” Trump ridiculed Denmark’s security measures, stating that they currently have “two dogsleds as protection, one added recently.”
“Nobody will touch this sacred piece of land,” Trump declared, pointing out that “the National Security of the United States, and the World at large, is at stake.”
Trump also claimed that Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland have “journeyed to Greenland, for purposes unknown,” referring to the scenario as “very dangerous for the Safety, Security, and Survival of our Planet.”
While announcing the trade measures, Trump stated that starting February 1, 2026, the US will impose a 10% tariff on “any and all goods” coming from the eight nations. This tariff will increase to 25% from June 1, 2026, and will remain until “a Deal is reached for the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland.”
“The United States has been trying to complete this transaction for over 150 years,” Trump remarked, noting that previous efforts faltered because Denmark “has always refused.”
He connected this renewed urgency to advanced defense mechanisms, including the so-called “Golden Dome,” stating that the system’s success “can only work at its maximum potential and efficiency… if this land is included in it.”
Trump mentioned that the US is “immediately open to negotiation with Denmark” and the other involved countries, emphasizing that strong actions are necessary to ensure the situation “ends quickly, and without question,” for the sake of “Global Peace and Security.”
