The groundbreaking ceremony for the Google data centre hub will see participation from Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, alongside high-ranking company officials, including Thomas Kurian.
Site details
The project will span three locations in Andhra Pradesh — Adavivaram and Tarluvada in Visakhapatnam district, and Rambilli in Anakapalli district. Combined, the campuses will boast a total capacity of 1 gigawatt (GW), positioning it among the largest data centre clusters in Asia.
The Andhra Pradesh government has dedicated over 600 acres of land across these areas for the initiative. As reported by The Economic Times, the official commencement is anticipated to occur at either the Tarluvada or Rambilli site.
In response to a request from Raiden Infotech India, the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC) has assigned 601.4 acres to Adani Infra Limited for the development of the hub.
A senior official noted, “The state government has allocated 174.8 acres at Rambilli, 160 acres at Adavivaram and Mudasarlova, and 266.6 acres at Tarluvada,” according to ET.
Investment and timeline
The data centre hub is being constructed with a $15 billion investment and is slated for completion by July 2028. This project follows a memorandum of understanding signed between Google and the
Andhra Pradesh government in October of last year.
The three advanced data centres will feature high-capacity submarine cables, dedicated landing stations, and extensive metro fibre lines supported by robust telecommunications infrastructure.
Who is building the project
The project is being carried out by Raiden Infotech India Private Limited, a Google subsidiary. It has teamed up with AdaniConnex and Airtel for its development. Three Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) have been set up, all wholly owned by Adani Infra Limited.
In an October blog post, the tech giant stated, “Working with partners, AdaniConnex and Airtel, this hub will provide the reliable, advanced infrastructure required for large enterprises and innovative Indian startups to develop and scale their own AI-driven solutions, ultimately helping India assert its position as a global leader in the AI-driven future.”
Strategic importance for India
The Visakhapatnam data centre hub is set to play a vital role in meeting India’s rapidly growing digital and AI needs. Designed as a specialized facility with gigawatt-scale computing capabilities, the campus will adhere to the high standards that support global Google services such as Search, YouTube, and Workspace.
This initiative is also expected to strengthen India’s status in the global technology arena by delivering high-performance, low-latency infrastructure for businesses, developers, and researchers.
Currently, Google and its subsidiaries oversee data centres across 11 countries, including the United States, Japan, Singapore, Ireland, and Germany, covering a total of 29 locations globally. The upcoming cluster in Visakhapatnam is anticipated to emerge as the largest data centre hub in Asia.
