Global Travel: The Impact of Visa Regulations on Destination Selection
Visa regulations are increasingly influencing how Indian travellers plan their international journeys. Experts indicate that choices are driven not only by the attraction of destinations but also by factors like ease of entry, connectivity, and the overall travel experience.

Industry representatives emphasize that the convenience of obtaining a visa is now a significant factor in destination selection and travel dates.

Visa convenience is a factor in destination selection
Marloes Knippenberg, CEO of Kerten Hospitality, a global mixed-use lifestyle operator, states that destinations offering visa-free or easier entry are becoming more popular, especially among younger travellers who prefer straightforward and adaptable travel arrangements.

She noted an uptick in interest for locations like Kuwait and Morocco, among others, due to their streamlined visa processes and smoother entry experiences.

The focus is shifting from exclusivity

Experts suggest that choices of destinations are no longer solely based on exclusivity or traditional luxury.

“While exclusivity plays a role, it is not the entire picture,” comments Mohak Nahta, Founder and CEO of Atlys, a travel tech platform.

“For many in this demographic, aspects such as connectivity, visa simplicity, and infrastructure are crucial. The desire remains, but the criteria have evolved.”

He added that modern travellers assess destinations with more intention, weighing experiences against practical considerations like visa requirements, infrastructure, and trip feasibility.

Essentials to consider before exploring emerging destinations

Experts note that emerging destinations are often highlighted through social media, creator-led travel initiatives, and personal recommendations, yet it’s vital for travellers to consider fundamental planning factors.

Nahta pointed out that important considerations include “connectivity, visa clarity, seasonality, infrastructure, and total trip budget,” particularly in regions where tourism systems are still developing.

Visa accessibility is reshaping travel patterns

Observers in the industry suggest that simpler visa procedures are impacting the frequency and spontaneity of travel.

“Visa accessibility is important because it facilitates more spontaneous trips. The easier it is to reach a destination, the more appealing it becomes for last-minute, experience-driven travel,” Nahta explained.

Travel trends are moving towards slower, more personalized experiences

Beyond entry, travellers are changing their approach to experiencing destinations upon arrival.

Ruchi Kohli, Chief of the Experience at Away&Co, a bespoke travel curation agency, noted that travellers are emphasizing immersive and customized journeys over traditional luxury offerings.

Many now prefer boutique accommodations, quieter spots, and extended itineraries, focusing more on privacy, accessibility, and meaningful engagement.

Kohli also mentioned that while emerging destinations hold significant allure, travellers should balance exploration with practical considerations like infrastructure and accessibility to ensure a smoother travel experience.
