Dubai and Vietnam Top Last-Minute Winter Getaways for Indians Amid Rupee Decline and Rising Interest in Shorter Trips
The declining value of the rupee is subtly changing how Indians approach their winter vacations abroad, steering travelers towards shorter, more spontaneous trips and destinations with manageable costs. Rather than embarking on lengthy, costly journeys that are meticulously planned months ahead, many Indian vacationers are now choosing brief getaways booked shortly before departure, with currency fluctuations and festive pricing significantly influencing their decisions.

Data from Cox & Kings indicates that last-minute international bookings made within 15 to 20 days of travel have surged by nearly 30% compared to the previous winter. Over 65% of these trips last less than five days, highlighting a distinct shift towards concise itineraries that maximize experience while minimizing extended overseas expenses. This trend has intensified during the Christmas and New Year period, as travelers aim to find a balance between celebration and budget awareness.

As a result, Dubai and Vietnam have become the top international destinations sought by Indian travelers this winter, surpassing several traditional favorites despite the busy season. Both locations provide excellent flight connectivity from India, relatively simple visa processes, and the capacity to bundle various experiences into brief stays, thereby reducing exposure to fluctuating currency costs.

“The most notable change this winter is the profile of last-minute travelers. Nearly 45% of our spontaneous winter bookings come from families traveling with children and senior members, particularly to destinations like Dubai where safety, medical facilities, and indoor attractions are priorities. Conversely, Vietnam is experiencing a significant increase in young adults and first-time travelers,” stated Karan Agarwal, Director of Cox & Kings.

The company has also observed an uptick in senior travelers opting for short-haul international vacations. Individuals aged 55 and above are increasingly gravitating towards destinations with dependable infrastructure and straightforward travel arrangements, reflecting a wider trend favoring comfort and certainty amidst a challenging economic landscape.

Dubai remains the frontrunner in last-minute winter bookings, especially among families and multi-generational groups. Its allure stems from a blend of safety, high-quality medical care, and a variety of indoor attractions that are not dependent on weather. Direct flights from multiple Indian cities and a packed winter event calendar position Dubai as a reliable option even during peak travel times. Many travelers are choosing three- to four-night stays, combining classic sightseeing with indoor attractions like snow parks, curated desert safaris with dining experiences, theme parks for children, and relaxed waterfront dining that appeals to senior visitors.

In contrast, Vietnam has emerged as the standout value destination this season. According to Cox & Kings, it is rapidly becoming the most popular choice for last-minute winter bookings among millennials, Gen Z travelers, and young couples. Although winter is peak travel season in Vietnam and availability may be limited, the streamlined e-visa process and improved flight options have prompted continued late bookings.

Young professionals, groups of friends, and first-time international travelers find Vietnam appealing for experiences such as Ha Long Bay cruises, cultural trips in Hoi An, and Hanoi’s vibrant café scene complemented by nature-based adventures in the northern region. Social media buzz regarding Vietnam’s culinary scene, nightlife, and picturesque landscapes has further inspired spur-of-the-moment travel plans.

Beyond specific destinations, the weakening rupee has accelerated a broader behavioral change among Indian travelers. Consumers are making quicker decisions, opting for shorter trips, and prioritizing experiences over lengthy stays. There’s also an evident trend toward countries offering visa-on-arrival or efficient e-visa options. Destinations like Oman, Sri Lanka, and Bali are witnessing increased last-minute interest, yet Dubai and Vietnam continue to dominate the market.

As currency challenges persist, Indian travelers are reevaluating their travel methods rather than abandoning international vacations entirely. Cox & Kings anticipates that last-minute overseas bookings will remain robust throughout the winter, highlighting a fundamental shift in Indian travel preferences driven by the realities of a depreciating rupee.
