The partnership, revealed on Thursday, marks an essential advancement in Hollywood’s acceptance of generative artificial intelligence, despite ongoing concerns within the industry regarding AI’s effects on creative employment and intellectual property rights.
As part of the deal, Sora and ChatGPT Images are anticipated to begin producing fan-requested videos featuring licensed Disney characters in early 2026.
The companies plan to leverage OpenAI’s models to develop new products, tools, and customer experiences, including those for Disney+ subscribers.
This collaboration follows criticism from Hollywood’s leading talent agency regarding the same technology that Disney is now supporting.
Creative Artists Agency, which advocates for thousands of actors, directors, and music artists, expressed its concerns in October, stating that OpenAI was putting artists at “significant risk” through Sora, and questioned whether the AI firm saw the necessity of compensating and crediting creative professionals for their contributions.
Under the agreement with OpenAI, a selection of user-generated videos will be accessible for streaming on the Disney+ platform. Additionally, ChatGPT will be implemented for employees, according to the companies.
The collaboration will also encompass image generation on ChatGPT, utilizing the same Disney intellectual property.
