Clearing the Air: Ajit Pawar Addresses Police Visit to NCP Strategist's Office

On Tuesday, January 13, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Ajit Pawar sought to clarify rumors following a visit by Pune Crime Branch officials to the offices of political strategist Naresh Arora and his consultancy, DesignBoxed.

Pawar stated in an official statement that the police’s presence was part of a routine inquiry and not an enforcement operation, according to News18.

He mentioned that the firm cooperated fully with the authorities, allowing officials access to all requested information during their visit.

Pawar emphasized that no incriminating documents or financial irregularities were discovered, warning against the mischaracterization of the event as a raid, as reported by News18.

Political speculation amid election season

The visit attracted attention within Maharashtra’s political landscape due to DesignBoxed’s involvement in managing the NCP’s digital outreach and public messaging in the lead-up to local body elections.

In response to the speculation, Pawar noted that the “concerned officers” completed their work without any issues and called for restraint in drawing baseless conclusions, according to News18.

By framing the incident as a standard inquiry, the Deputy Chief Minister aimed to diffuse allegations of political bias or professional misconduct during a critical time for the party.

NCP split and alliance shift

The NCP, established by Sharad Pawar, underwent a split two years ago following a rebellion by Ajit Pawar. His faction subsequently joined the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), with Ajit Pawar assuming the role of Deputy Chief Minister.

Both factions are now preparing for the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation elections set for January 15.

Firm backing for Naresh Arora

Pawar reiterated the party’s commitment to Naresh Arora and DesignBoxed, emphasizing that the NCP respects legal processes but will not tolerate the spread of “confusion, rumours, or baseless narratives,” as stated by News18.

He characterized the party’s approach as one of “patience, responsibility, and clarity,” indicating an intention to protect key strategists from controversy during the campaign period.

DesignBoxed has collaborated with leaders across various parties and plays a crucial role in the NCP’s current perception management strategies. Pawar’s public support highlights the party’s dedication to its professional allies amid what it considers undue scrutiny, as per News18.

Wider scrutiny of political consultancies

This situation arises amid increased scrutiny of political consulting firms nationwide. Recently, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted searches at the Kolkata offices of I-PAC and the residence of its director, Pratik Jain, in relation to a multi-crore money laundering investigation tied to an alleged coal smuggling syndicate.

The agency claimed that “tens of crores” were funneled through hawala channels, a statement denied by I-PAC, which maintains its cooperation with investigators.

The situation escalated after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused the ED of trying to “steal” her party’s election strategy, while the ED subsequently approached the Supreme Court, alleging “state-sponsored obstruction.”
