Before the Bihar elections, CM Nitish Kumar increases monthly pension to ₹1,100.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced on Saturday, June 21, that the monthly pension for senior citizens, individuals with disabilities, and widowed women enrolled in the state’s Social Security Pension Schemes will rise from ₹400 to ₹1,100. This change, effective in July, will benefit 1,09,69,255 participants of the state’s pension program.

This declaration comes as Bihar prepares for its Assembly elections later this year.

In a post on X, the Chief Minister shared, “I am happy to announce that under the Social Security Pension Scheme, all elderly individuals, differently-abled persons, and widowed women will now receive a monthly pension of ₹1,100 instead of ₹400. All beneficiaries will start receiving the pension at the new rate from July.”
The government will ensure that the increased amount is delivered to the beneficiaries by the tenth of each month, he added.

“It will be ensured that this amount is transferred to all beneficiaries’ accounts by the 10th of each month. This will significantly benefit 1,09,69,255 individuals. Our elderly population is invaluable to society, and guaranteeing their dignified living is our utmost concern. The state government will persistently work towards this goal,” he stated.

Referring to it as a ‘historic day,’ Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister for the increase in pension amounts. “Today marks a historic day as the CM has raised the pensions for widows, the elderly, and those with disabilities. I extend my thanks to the CM for this decision.”

The announcement follows just a week after Kumar allocated ₹254 crore to 61,29,548 beneficiaries across five key social security initiatives.

On June 20, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for numerous development projects valued at over ₹5,200 crore in Bihar’s Siwan. Speaking to a large audience, he remarked, “India is on the trajectory to becoming the third-largest economy, and Bihar will have a significant role in this progress.”
