The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has now urged the ECB to establish an individual performance award in honor of former India captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi for the impending series.
“It’s the ECB who makes the choice on whom they wish to name their series. The BCCI has no involvement as it’s their home series. We have asked them to name one of the post-match trophies in Pataudi’s memory, and they will get back to us,” a BCCI official shared with The Indian Express.
The ECB’s action is in sync with the growing trend of honoring legendary cricketers by naming series after them. In 2020, the Wisden Trophy—contested between England and the West Indies since 1963—was renamed to the Richards-Botham Trophy, celebrating the legends Viv Richards and Ian Botham.
In a similar vein, the England–New Zealand Test series is now held for the Crowe-Thorpe Trophy, named after Martin Crowe and Graham Thorpe. Since 1996, the India–Australia Test series has been contested for the now-famous Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
In that context, the ECB has opted to honor James Anderson and Sachin Tendulkar, two modern-day icons, with the new series title. However, the BCCI’s request seeks to ensure that Pataudi’s vital contributions to Indian cricket are acknowledged in some manner during this marquee event.
