Bangladesh Experiences New Murder of Hindu Youth Amid Rising Attacks on Minorities
A Hindu man was fatally attacked in the Sunamganj district of Bangladesh on Thursday, heightening anxieties regarding a surge in violent incidents against minorities in the nation. As reported by Moneycontrol, the family of 19-year-old Joy Mahapatro claims he was assaulted by a local resident and compelled to ingest poison, leading to his death.

Mahapatro was taken to the intensive care unit at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, where he eventually succumbed to his injuries. This incident comes in the wake of numerous violent acts reported against the Hindu community in recent weeks.

Earlier this month, a 40-year-old Hindu man named Moni Chakraborty was attacked with sharp weapons and killed at Charsindhur Bazar in Palash Upazila of Narsingdi district on January 6. In another case, a Hindu businessman and acting editor of a local newspaper was shot dead in Jessore district. The victim, known as Pratap, was reportedly lured out of his ice factory in Kopalia Bazar and fatally shot by unknown assailants.
These recent murders come amidst a sequence of lynching events that have been reported since December 18, 2025, when Dipu Chandra Das was lynched and set ablaze in Mymensingh over alleged blasphemy. Shortly thereafter, Amrit Mondal was lynched in Rajbari for alleged extortion, while Khokon Chandra Das, a 50-year-old trader, faced a brutal attack and was set on fire.

India has voiced its concern regarding what it calls a “disturbing pattern” of attacks on minorities in Bangladesh. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that such incidents must be addressed “swiftly and firmly,” warning that downplaying them could embolden perpetrators and exacerbate fear within minority communities.
