Assam Assembly Elections 2026: Complete List of BJP Nominees and Their Electoral Districts
As the West Bengal elections approach, a peculiar political rivalry has emerged. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has challenged West Bengal’s Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, to a fish-eating contest.

This challenge came in response to allegations from the Trinamool Congress claiming that if the BJP wins the assembly elections in West Bengal, it will restrict meat and fish consumption. Sarma emphasized that in BJP-ruled Assam, people can indulge in as much non-vegetarian food as they please.

He clarified that the only limitation in Assam pertains to beef consumption.
“You can go to Dhubri or Goalpara and enjoy fish and meat without any limits; there’s no prohibition,” Sarma stated.

In an interview with NDTV, he said, “I invite Mamata Di, or anyone from TMC. I’ll send someone from the BJP. Let’s eat fish together and see who can consume more.”

During an election rally, Sarma alleged that the TMC intends for cattle smuggling to Bangladesh to “continue for their own gain.”

He mentioned that West Bengal needs a government capable of providing adequate “treatment” for Bangladeshi immigrants who have entered the state unlawfully. “We must ensure the BJP’s victory in West Bengal in this election for that purpose,” he asserted.

Sarma added that the BJP government in Assam has successfully prevented illegal land occupation by Bangladeshi Muslims in the northeastern state. “We have removed them from unlawfully occupied land,” he remarked.

The elections for the 294-member West Bengal assembly are scheduled to take place in two phases – on April 23 and April 29, with vote counting on May 4.
