Royal Challengers are the reigning IPL champions and possibly hold the largest fan base among the ten teams in the league.
“Over the next few months, I will be submitting a STRONG and COMPETITIVE bid for RCB, one of the premier teams in the IPL,” Poonawalla, CEO of Pune-based vaccine manufacturer Serum Institute of India, stated on his official ‘X’ account.
However, the corporate executive did not disclose details such as a timeline or potential bid amount.
The bid must be placed soon, as IPL 2026 is set to commence on March 26.
The search for a new owner for RCB, which Forbes India currently values at approximately USD 105 million, began last November by the current owners, United Spirits Ltd (USL), the Indian arm of global beverage giant Diageo.
The tragic stampede on June 4, which resulted in the deaths of 11 fans during RCB victory celebrations, further propelled the decision to sell the team.
Praveen Someshwar, Managing Director & CEO of United Spirits Ltd, stated: “RCSPL has been a valuable and strategic asset for USL, but it’s non-core to our alcobev business.
“This action underscores USL’s and Diageo’s dedication to continuously review its India enterprise portfolio to ensure sustained long-term value for all stakeholders while prioritizing RCSPL’s best interests.” United Spirits acquired RCB from its original owner, Vijay Mallya, after his business ventures collapsed in 2016.
Poonawalla’s tweet comes at a moment when there are speculations that RCB may relocate their home matches out of Bengaluru for IPL 2026.
Pune, Mumbai, and Raipur are reportedly in discussions with the franchise to host seven home-leg matches.
On Wednesday, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) urged RCB management to remain in Bengaluru for their home games, highlighting improvements in security and facilities at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
However, RCB responded by indicating that “there are still a few grey areas that need addressing, and we are evaluating these parameters and feedback from all stakeholders before making a responsible decision for the team and our fans.” Aside from Poonawalla, Hombale Films, owned by Vijay Kiragandur, is also vying to acquire RCB.
Hombale is the production house responsible for blockbuster films like KGF and Kantara sequels. An official statement from the owners is still pending.
