Kamal Haasan's MNM opts out of Tamil Nadu elections, pledges support to DMK
Actor-politician Kamal Haasan’s Makkal Needhi Maiam, a part of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance, has declared that it will not participate in the upcoming Assembly elections on April 23 in Tamil Nadu. Instead, the party will support the DMK in the state elections.

The MNM stated that the number of seats offered by the DMK and the suggestion for MNM candidates to contest under the DMK’s Rising Sun symbol are not acceptable.

Haasan mentioned that his party would refrain from contesting elections but would provide unconditional support to all candidates in the DMK-led alliance. The decision was praised by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, who described it as a “magnanimous decision, putting aside self-interest with dignity and prioritizing the welfare of Tamil Nadu.”
“I cannot express how grateful I am to him. His decision has profoundly touched me,” Stalin, the DMK president, remarked while thanking Haasan. He urged “brother Kamal Haasan” to campaign throughout the state for the elections on April 23.

Haasan, who met with the chief minister to communicate his decision on Tuesday evening, stated: “In today’s challenging political climate, the number of seats promised by them (DMK) and the proposal to contest under the Rising Sun symbol are unacceptable to both the MNM members and myself.”

The MNM joined the DMK-led alliance during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections for the nation’s benefit. “We exerted considerable effort for the success of the alliance. Consequently, the voice of Makkal Needhi Maiam was recognized in the Rajya Sabha. From that day forward, we have upheld alliance dharma without compromising our uniqueness,” he added.

The AIADMK criticized Haasan’s decision. Party spokesperson Kovai Sathyan stated, “Kamal Haasan’s choice not to contest in the assembly election does not represent a sacrifice; it highlights his incompetence. This issue often arises with actors from the screen. They tend to believe that what they present in front of the camera equates to success in public life. However, political acumen, leadership qualities, and attributes are essential for serving the people effectively. Unfortunately, many from the film industry who pursue public life lack the necessary leadership qualities. Several individuals celebrated as movie heroes who have ventured into politics have ended up dissolving their parties. We anticipate that Vijay will follow the same trajectory within months after the assembly elections.”
