Bindra, who led the board from 1993 to 1996, died here on Sunday at the age of 84.
“Mr I.S. Bindra was an exceptional visionary whose leadership transformed India’s standing in global cricket,” stated BCCI President Mithun Manhas.
“His influence extended well beyond governance; he developed systems and institutions that continue to benefit players, administrators, and the sport itself. The BCCI grieves the loss of a true titan of Indian cricket administration.” During his leadership as BCCI president, Bindra was instrumental in fortifying India’s status within the international cricket community.
Alongside former presidents N.K.P. Salve and Jagmohan Dalmiya, Bindra played a crucial role in bringing the 1987 ICC Cricket World Cup to the subcontinent—the first edition held outside England after three consecutive tournaments.
The Dalmiya-Bindra era also ensured that India hosted the 1996 World Cup, further cementing the nation’s pivotal role in the global cricket arena.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia remarked: “Indian cricket has lost one of its most significant architects. Mr Bindra’s dedication to the game, administrative insight, and passion for establishing lasting infrastructure have created a legacy that will be revered throughout the cricket community.”
Bindra also held the position of president of the Punjab Cricket Association from 1978 to 2014. As a tribute to his lasting contributions, the PCA Stadium in Mohali was renamed the I.S. Bindra Stadium in 2015.
“As former President of both the PCA and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), his visionary leadership and unwavering dedication left a profound impact on the sport,” said PCA president Amarjit Singh Mehta.
“Throughout his time at the PCA, Bindra revolutionized cricket administration in Punjab with a focus on professionalism, strategic planning, and significant emphasis on infrastructure development.
“The establishment of the PCA Stadium at Mohali serves as a lasting reminder of his vision and determination, elevating Punjab’s profile on the international cricket stage,” he added.
